Silver Linning Notebook starts with Pat Solitano, a mental patient in an institute. A 180 degree shot is shown of his room, this shows the audience the circumstances he is living in, leading them to draw a first impression of Pat as mentally unstable. A close up shot of his medication supports this. However this is contrasted by the close up shots of Pat's face, his eyes, his dress sense, which do not differ from a sane person. Pat has been discharged and is now at home with his parents, there is a slow scene with a two shot with him and his father, and the audience is able to feel the awkward tension between the two.
Pat states he is going to 'get back into shape'now that he has returned home. We see a dolly shot of him running but only focusing on his feet. This symbolises Pat moving foward, now that he has been released he is aiming to move forward with his life and 'get his feet back on the ground.'
Pat is to then have a session with a therapist. On arrival at the clinic he is greeted by the receptionist as he signs in. The audience views a 360 degree round shot of the fixed eye contact these two characters share. Personally, the emotions I see to be occurring through their direct gaze to eachother is; the fake, pleasant nature the receptionist is trying to portray. She knows the possible fragile state the patients are in and is trying to be empathetic towards them. However Pat sees straight through this and is not wanting to be treated differently. The stern look on his face confirms this, as if to say ' I know it is your job, but I do not need your sympathy.' It is surprising how much can be portrayed just through eye contact between two people!

Rip It Up Magazine
Task 7th Feb: Rip It Up Magazine
1) What do it notice on the front cover?
At the top of the page there is a strapline, that is advertising a band by using two lines above the main title. Super imposition is used over top of the main bold heading ‘Rip It Up’ making the band appear as more dominant. “The Killers” is written in typography across the centre of the cover suggesting it is the leading article in the magazine and will be featured. The colours incorporated in the cover are more masculine and dark, giving off the impression that this is a magazine targeted at men at an age of 30+ considering “The Killers” are quite an old and mature rock band. The same text is used throughout the magazine which is referred to as ‘house style’
2) Can you spot any reviews? Do these reviews tend to be of the same type of music or are they varied? Can you see any features? What are they generally of?
All the reviews are separated into music types, however they are quite alternative and of similar types to each other. There are such different types as 'Indie rock' and Rap and HipHop. The Features in the magazine advertise the reviews that are contained within the magazine if not broadcasting them to the magazines potential audience. The features are usually the titles of the main featuring reviews or the artists that are are featured within the magazine usually in bold font on the cover of the magazine so it is eye catching to the audience.
3) What are the typical 'ideologies' of the magazine. Can you spot any of these? What do they say?
'Rip it up' is a magazine that is usually conveyed as having dark colours and quite a masculine nature about it. The magazine also has matte pages, thus on a whole this magazine is generally aimed at a male audience. In comparison to women's magazines that generally incorporatie bright colours and the use of high gloss paper which is more appealing and aimed at a female audience.
4) What are the Unique Selling Points of the magazine? How do they effectively target an audience
The magazine usually focus's on one specific artist per edition so this is targeted at music lovers, of mainly alterante genres. The physical features of the magazine are also included such as the large size that makes the magazine more significant and can also signify for the reader to be getting good value for what they are paying for. The matte pages are generally also linked with being of higher value and more of more value also which can too be appealing to the audience and a point of difference from other magazines.
5) Think back to 'audience gratification theory' and decide if the magazine targets an audience in terms of: surveillance, personal relationships, personal identity or escapism?
'Rip it up' can easily target an audience on the topic of escapism as readers can become intregued in artlies and reviews about their favourite bands, who they potentially idolise and temporally escape reality and become engrossed in the information they are reading. Surveillance is also a present theme in the magazine as music lovers are able to keep up with what their favourite music artists are doing and what their carrers are currently consisiting of, making the audience of 'Rip it up' feel as though they are in the know.

Love the Way You Lie Analysis
How does the technical elements of this clip enhance the representation of gender roles in this video?
In the first shot of the video there is a close up shot on Rihanna's face, showing she as a woman is of importace. A crane shot is then used to show the the featuring man and woman in bed in an embrace showing they re both content and of an equal status at that current moment. Futher into the video we see conflict in a medium shot of the couple fighting in the same bed that there were previously at peace in. showing that both have dominance and are contributing to the fight as they are both participating in the fight.
A two shot is then displayed showing the girl leaving with purpose and him wanting her back and following her trying to chase her and stop her from leaving. This shows that the female is being represented as being of desire and importance to the man as he is wanting her back. This then turns into pan of the two fighting, but this time it is the man who is dominant over the woman, as he is initiating the fight and she is resisting and not fighting bak showing he has power and authority over her, suggesting the woman has a potential fear of him. With the use of transitions the couple are then back together and displaying their love and lust towards each other, showing they are both nieve and do not hold their angry emotion for a long period of time, the use of golden lighting behind them streaming through the window intensifies their moment together and proves they are both currently wanting the same thing as men and woman. The man is shown in a field, a wide open space, letting out his emotion and anger which is portrayed through a high action shot, showing he is of small size in comparision to the location he is in, suggesting that maybe his personal problems are of little importance. Throughout the video there are snippets of Rihanna in a medium shot with an alight back round signing with strong emotion, proving her opinion is valid as a woman and that she is of importance. Later The man is incorporated into the scene also, but he is behind Rihanna showing he is inferrer to her, and that she has dominance over him. In the final shot of the video, it is a repeat of the couple in an embrace in bed, again content and at peace, this shows their issues have been resolved and that they are now again at an equal status despite their conflict.

Angus and Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane [Official Music Video]

Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love [Official Video]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOjdXSrtUxA
This music video shows the use of illustrate as the images and graphics contained in the video are bassed around the idea of a female represented as 'cupid' giving love and creating romance between others but in return not receiving any herself. Hence the lyrics state 'give me love' referring to the want of love by the featured girl. Sheeran's music video shows her feeling as if she is empty and alone due to not having any love, with scenes or he viewing happy couples and knowing she does not having a relationship of the same nature.
